HLT21020 Certificate II in Medical Service First Response

Course Description

This Emergency Medical First Response program meets industry requirements for Occupational First Aid.  A highly practical and interactive program, it provides the knowledge and skills for Medical Service Responders who require the ability to respond, assess, manage, extricate and transport persons involved in traumatic and life threatening incidents in rural and remote situations. 

This program is suitable for people working in industry who may be required to provide, coordinate and manage a first aid response across a range of complex situations, including community and workplace settings.

The aim of this program is to decrease scene times and increase the standard of medical care and the survivability of seriously injured casualties. This program has been a success across a range of industries and has had a positive impact on teams and individuals.

Units of Competency

This course consists of:

Core Units

  • CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people
  • HLTAID011 Provide first aid
  • HLTINF006 Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention control
  • HLTWHS002 Follow safe work practices for direct client care
  • HLTWHS006 Manage personal stressors in the work environment

Elective Units

  • HLTAID013 Provide First aid in remote or isolated site
  • HLTAID014 Provide advanced first aid
  • HLTAID015 Provide advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy^
  • HLTAID016 Manage first aid services and resources
^These units have pre-requisite requirements.

Mode of Delivery

This course will be delivered as a blend of distance/online and face-to-face learning and assessment.

Duration*

This course is scheduled for:

Distance/online learning and assessment and 5 days of face-to-face practical demonstrations. Additional days required depending on electives chosen.

Student's should allow approximately 6 months to complete this course.

Pre-Requisite and Entry Requirements

Students holding a previous certification for the unit of competency and are seeking recognition must supply their credential at the time of enrolment.

Students must have language, literacy and numeracy skills (LLN) to interpret and apply relevant information to commence learning in this program. An LLN assessment may be conducted upon receipt of enrolment application to ensure each student has the appropriate level of skills required to undertake this course.

^HLTAID011 Provide first aid is a formal pre-requisite for HLTAID015 and is covered within this program.

Certification

Students who successfully complete this course and demonstrate competence will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment under the Australian Qualifications Framework. The certification will be issued by Risk Response and Rescue (RTO 90774).

Course Inclusions

All course materials, handouts and personal protective equipment will be provided.

Student Requirements

Students must be physically capable of performing at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.

Students must wear appropriate clothing and footwear when attending face-to-face sessions.

Additional Information

First aid training must be updated every 3 years.
