Fire Prevention, Extinguishment + Containment

Overview

This program provides participants with the knowledge and skills required to identify the hazards and risks associated with fire. Upon successful completion, participants will be able to determine if it is safe and appropriate to use first attack fire equipment as well as demonstrate the correct applications and understand the limitations of portable fire fighting appliances such as fire extinguishers, blankets and hose reels. This program also includes methods of fire spread and fire containment strategies.

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to demonstrate the use of portable fire extinguishers, fire hose reels and fire blankets.

1. Demonstrate correct use of portable fire extinguishers to extinguish simulated fires.
2. Demonstrate correct use of fire hose reels.
3. Demonstrate correct use of fire blanket.

This unit of competency supports fire protection equipment service technicians responsible for demonstrating to customers how to interpret and follow manufacturers’ instructions on various first attack firefighting equipment in emergency situations.
