Course Description

This course covers the knowledge and skills covers for the competent operation and maintenance of breathing apparatus for use in an irrespirable atmosphere. This program applies to operators who are required to wear breathing apparatus for part of their job - because they are working in a confined space, with hazardous gases/vapours, in an anoxic atmosphere or for other applications requiring the wearing of breathing apparatus.

Duration & Mode of Delivery

This course is scheduled for:

1 day (8 hours) of face-to-face learning and assessment

Unit of Competency

The program is aligned to meet the following Nationally Recognised units of competency:

  • MSMWHS216 Operate breathing apparatus

Pre-Requisite and Entry Requirements

Students holding a previous certification for the unit of competency and are seeking recognition must supply their credential at the time of enrolment.

Students must have language, literacy and numeracy skills (LLN) to interpret and apply relevant information to commence learning in this program. An LLN assessment may be conducted upon receipt of enrolment application to ensure each student has the appropriate level of skills required to undertake this course.

Student Requirements

Participation in this course may require participants to be able to complete the following tasks.  

  • Climbing up and down stairs in low or zero visibility
  • Ability to bend, kneel & crawl
  • Ability to push, pull and drag heavy loads (dragging of a 70-100kg dummy)
  • Climbing and descending ladders
  • Working from at height
  • Hauling and lower loads aloft
  • Wearing breathing apparatus
  • Potential of claustrophobia wearing breathing apparatus and working in zero visibility

Students must wear enclosed safety boots, long sleeved shirt and long pants. 

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided however if participants have their own, it is recommended to bring these along to increase familiarity.

Certification

Students who successfully complete the Units of Competency (UOC) and demonstrate competence will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment under the Australian Qualifications Framework. The certification will be issued by Risk Response and Rescue (RTO 90774).
